That was the goal over 30 years ago of our founder Robert Ecsedy. His vision, determination and ingenuity launched and propelled Bobbex to being recognized today as the leader in safe and effective animal repellents.

Bobbex Overview: A Passioned Beginning

In the late 1980s, Robert “Bob” Ecsedy (last name pronounced X-City, and known as “Bob-X” to his friends) lived in Newtown, Connecticut and worked in sales. A graduate of the University of Bridgeport with a degree in chemistry, Bob represented various chemical companies in support of Northeast manufacturing. Bob’s personal interests centered around horticulture and gardening, serving for several years as the President of the Fairfield Horticultural Society.

Once retired, Bob Ecsedy dedicated himself even further to his gardening passion, planting and managing a large garden with over 300 tomato plants. Bob used a slurry of fish products as a “more natural” fertilizer for his crops. He noticed that after using his unique mixture, deer tended to avoid eating the fertilized plants. At that moment, the “seeds for sowing a new product” were planted!

Combining his chemistry background and horticultural experience, Bob began passionately tinkered with the formulation as he tested a number of changes and variations to improve repellency and longevity. Soon his formula was perfected, and Bob began offering the mixture to friends and associates for trial and comment. This included local garden centers where he took his product for a professional and unbiased assessment.

The results were conclusive and unanimous: Robert “Bob” Ecsedy’s Deer Repellent REALLY WORKED! And with that, “Bob-X” launched Bobbex!

Proven Most Effective Deer Repellent!

Think a tall fence is the only sure thing to keep deer out of your landscape? Think again. Testing by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station revealed Bobbex Deer Repellent to be more effective than nine other commercial deer repellents in the marketplace (including coyote urine), and gave it a 93 percent protection index, second only to a fence at 100 percent.

Made from a combination of ingredients that blends the scents of putrescent eggs, garlic, fish, clove oil, and vinegar (among other things), it works by mimicking predator scents, and is classed as a fear repellent. It also tastes awful, so deer have at least two reasons to avoid it. Bobbex can be applied in almost any climate or temperature and will not wash off after heavy rain, it dries clear and will not burn plant material. Bobbex is environmentally friendly, using all natural ingredients.

At the turn of the century, the deer population in the U.S. was actually less than 500,000 animals, current numbers are projected to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 20+ million animals. Recent data suggests that deer are now causing nearly $1 billion in farm, garden, and timber damage annually in the U.S.

Bobbex requires reapplication every couple of weeks during rapid springtime plant growth and once per month in the winter.

The putrescent eggs are only one source of taste/odor repelling ingredients in Bobbex. In addition to the eggs, Bobbex uses other proteins: fish meal, fish oil, meat meal, and two non-protein repellent ingredients added for odor control; garlic and clove oils.

The key to Bobbex’s success is the use of proteins and the redundancy of protein repellent ingredients. Most repellents use one to three repellent ingredients, Bobbex uses six. Bobbex is classified as a fear repellent. Deer, being herbivores are naturally repulsed and frightened by protein smells. It is odd to them and scares them, one reason why the products are so effective. Bobbex also adds Urea (high in nitrogen) and Epsom (Phosphorus), both for plant development. Bobbex has 12 ingredients, most competitors have 4 to 6 ingredients.

In periods of rapid growth, all topical and granular repellents need to be reapplied. Bobbex promotes dual application instructions on every label, essential for continued protection. The only time longevity really matters is in dormant times (winter). All other times of the year, plants continue to grow and will out-grow the last application. Product will need to be reapplied prior to the deterioration of the initial application.

Application Instructions

Bobbex can be and should be used all year. Before spraying, make sure the plants are dry. Bobbex will not stick well to wet surfaces. Also Bobbex will require approximately 6 hours of drying time to adequately adhere to plant surfaces.

Spring-Begin by spraying in the spring when the plants are approximately ½ inch out of the ground.The use of Bobbex should be accelerated in spring due to the rapid growth of plant material. Bobbex should be sprayed every 10 to 14 days or 2 inches of new plant growth, since new growth is unprotected.

Summer-Bobbex should be sprayed in the early morning hours rather than the extreme heat of the day. If sprayed when temperatures are above 85 degrees F, plants may encounter phyotoxicity. This is not due to the ingredients in the product, but rather the magnification of the sun through the water spread on plant’s surfaces.

Fall/Winter-Bobbex should be used in fall months even though plants are no longer at their peak. If applications of Bobbex are interrupted, deer may lose their conditioning to avoid previously treated plants. Regular spraying of Bobbex trains deer to seek nourishment elsewhere.

Bobbex is necessary in the fall and winter months for damage prevention to shrubs that keep their leaves throughout the year. These shrubs include rhododendrons, arborvitae, holly, and yews. (The last three plants are some of the more preferred plant material by deer).

In the winter, applicators should wait until temperatures rise above 35 degrees F. This will prevent the mechanical action of water freezing on leaves and drawing out the moisture from the leaf. This may cause browning along leaf edges. These cautionary recommendations apply to all water based horticultural products.

Will Bobbex products freeze? Yes, Bobbex products will freeze, however upon thawing they can still be used. The only detriment to freezing is that the bottoms of the containers will round out preventing the bottle from standing upright, which may cause spillage.

Bobbex can be used on all types of ornamentals, trees and shrubs. Bobbex should not be used on food plants when fruits, vegetables or herbs are already developed. Applicators can spray up to the point where the fruit develops on the plant.

Remember new growth is unprotected growth. A repellent is effective only as long as it covers the new growth.

Bobbex is used as a topical spray on plant material. Spray Bobbex lightly on plant material, wetting both sides of plant foliage, including buds and flowers until the first drop falls off leaf. Plant surfaces should be dry and applicators should allow 5 to 6 hours of dry time in humid climates and 2 to 3 hours in arid climates before forecasted rain or irrigation. Proper drying time will allow the product to set properly on plant surfaces and become water insoluble. Bobbex is actually good for plants so applicators cannot overspray the product. Dilution Ratios for all Bobbex Concentrate Products:

In Spring & Summer (Fast Growth Times):	In Late Fall & Winter (Dormant times):
Dilute 1 ounce of Bobbex Concentrate to every 8 ounces of water. (14 ounces of Bobbex Concentrate makes 1 gallon of diluted Bobbex).	Dilute 1 ounce of Bobbex Concentrate to every 5 ounces of water. (21 ounces of Bobbex Concentrate makes 1 gallon of diluted Bobbex).
Spray every 7 to 14 days during periods of rapid growth.	Spray every 4-8 weeks depending on severity of problem.

Dilute only the amount of Bobbex you intend to spray. Diluted mixture should be used within 5 days. To clean the tank, rinse tank with a mild soapy water solution and spray through the hose.

Store the unused, undiluted portions of Bobbex in a cool dry place. *All instructions, tips, spray schedules and ratios apply to all Bobbex Concentrate Products.

Bobbex on Vegetables

By July and August, Deer will generally find other edible things in their more natural setting. Your garden may not have as much Deer pressure towards harvest time, but if it does, here is some advice on where to spray Bobbex.

Fruit (flowering) Bearing Vegetables:
Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Squash, Apples, Pumpkins, etc...	Spray Bobbex liberally (as specified above) through the flowering stage. As the fruit matures, continue spraying leaf and stem, avoid spraying the fuit. Wash vegetables thoroughly.
Rooted Vegetables:
Potatoes, Beets, Carrots, etc...	Bobbex can be used on rooted vegetable plants provided the plant-leaf will not be eaten.
Leafy Vegetables:
Lettuce, Cabbage, Kale, etc...	Do not use Bobbex on leafy vegetables. Bobbex contains stickers, which allow the product to stick and last a long time on plant surfaces. Bobbex will stay in the crevasses of the leaf and be very difficult to wash off. Bobbex does not make the best salad dressing.
Herbs:
Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Parsley, Rosemary, etc...	Do not use Bobbex on Herbs. For the same reason as leafy vegetables, Bobbex will affect the tastes of your herbs and will be difficult to wash off.
Fruits:
Raspberries, Strawberries, Peaches, etc...	Bobbex can be used through the bud stage, not on the fruit stage. Bobbex will be very difficult to wash off the fruit.

Why is Bobbex better?

Bobbex uses 6 ingredients that actively deter deer from browsing and causing other damage to ornamental plants, shrubs and trees. Although only 3 ingredients are considered active by the EPA, the inert ingredients such as Meat Meal, Fish Meal, and Fish Oil also have an impact on lowering deer predation.

The combination and multiple redundancy of repelling ingredients make Bobbex a superior product over competitors.

Bobbex Deer Repellent has been independently tested (* See Effectiveness of Bobbex vs Other Repellents page) against ten (10) known competitors, including Hinder, Liquid Fence, Chew-Not, Big Game, Deer Off, Plantskydd, Coyote urine and Repellex. Bobbex Deer Repellent was found to be 93% effective, second only to a physical barrier.

Bobbex contains an extremely effective sticking agent that will last through several heavy rains. The fish oil used in the product allows the product, when dry on plants, to be water insoluble. Bobbex will not dissolve into a liquid once dry.

How does Bobbex work?

Bobbex works by smell and taste aversion, can be applied in almost any climate or temperature and will not wash off after heavy rain. Bobbex dries clear and although there is a slight odor, it will dissipate within 24 hours of application (to humans but not to deer). Bobbex will not burn plant material.

Can a Bobbex product protect bulbs?

Bobbex-R makes a great bulb dip program to prevent burrowing herbivores from smelling an discovering your wintered bulbs. Using Bobbex-R as a bulb protector will give your bulbs a chance to survive when first planted and throughout the Winter, protecting them from burrowing herbivores and deer. Voles use their keen sense of smell to find roots and bulbs underground. Bobbex-R creates anaromatic barrier around the bulb and prevents these animals from discovering the bulb.

Instructions for the Bobbex-R Bulb Dip Program

Remove all loose and dried plant tissue around the bulbs.
Dip bulbs in straight concentrated Bobbex-R (right out of the bottle). Allow bulbs to soak for 3 to 5 minutes.
Remove bulbs from concentrate and allow them to air dry.

Do Bobbex products wash off?

No, all Bobbex products are formulated to adhere to plant surfaces. This adherence prevents wash off due to rain, irrigation and normal watering. Over time plant foliage will absorb some nutrients, the balance will be absorbed into the root system by the plant.

How do I know what kind of pest is in my yard?

It can be hard to identify what sort of animal is causing damage in your garden. Here are some highlights and links to pages to give you more information and ways to treat your flowers, bushes, lawn and trees to prevent further damage.

How to identify damage from a rabbit:

Rabbit damage can be identified by a clean, angled cut on the end of leaves. You may also want to look for tracks left behind by the culprit ravaging your gardens. Wild rabbits have five toes on their front feet and four toes on their back. On trees and shrubs, rabbits may remove the bark completely around the trunks and stems, effectively girdling them several feet above the ground.

How to identify damage from a squirrel:

Damage may occur in your lawn and gardens due to pilfering squirrels uprooting your plants and flowers. Look for chew marks on your deck and home structure as well.

How to identify damage from a chipmunk:

Damage may occur in your lawn and gardens due to pilfering chipmunks uprooting your plants and flowers. Look closely when identifying chipmunk damage - it can often be mistaken for squirrels or voles. When a burrow is found, spray Bobbex-R Animal Repellent around and into the hole to deter the chipmunk from using the burrow.

How to identify damage from a groundhog:

Since you won't often catch them in the act of devouring your garden, it may be difficult to identify a groundhog as the culprit. You may want to look for tracks left behind by the culprit ravaging your gardens. Curved claws on their front paws make for easy burrowing. Groundhogs have four toes on the front foot and five on the back.

How to identify damage from a vole:

Voles may also cause extensive damage to orchards, ornamentals, and tree plantings due to their girdling of seedlings and mature trees. You will see this right at the soil line. Girdling damage usually occurs in fall and winter. Look closely for girdling and gnaw marks.
